The San Jose Fire Department Explorer Post 888 is made up of dedicated young men and women between the ages of 14 and 19 years old who are interested in pursuing a career in the fire service. Exploring allows these individuals to take part in classroom and hands-on fire suppression training. Certified Explorers are allowed to ride along with firefighters, drill and observe on emergency scenes. Explorers also take an active part in public relations activities for the San Jose Fire Department. Explorers meet on a regular basis to continue learning about new equipment and procedures and to discuss experiences gained from ride-alongs.
